These are sounds I assembled and music I made and recorded for a great production of a play by playwright Alex Reed, directed by Brad Steinmeyer, for Fringe Festival 2014 at University of Colorado, Boulder. The play Believe is a futuristic dystopian allegory and narrative of a machine mountain that is both a crumbling city and a worldview dominated by a major religious order.

about

This track plays earlier in a scene from the first act as the movement has brought in its new, young woman revolutionary into its circle. This Crumbling City Theme is a hint of the Main Theme, the musical seed where all of my music for this play came from, it is the spirit in sound of awesome and big change. Epic, unknowable, violent, inevitable. One of the members of the movement reads a poem within a play:

“When the Walls Crumble.”

When the walls crumble
The people will cry
No reassurance of faith
When they die

When the walls crumble
The people will gape
Into sprawling new lands
That bear foreign shape

When the walls crumble
The Sages will reach
As their flock opens eyes
Themselves they will teach

When the walls crumble
The Sages will fight
But the people will spill
Through the breach in the night

When the dust settles
The people grow bold
Their city’s strong towers
Stand naked and cold

When the dust settles
The people grow strong
They march for a home
And bellow in song

When the dust settles
The Sages will kneel
The taste of cold ash
In their mouths they will feel

When the dust settles
The Sages will sink
Like civilizations
Away they will blink

This music hints at the rising tension and power of change the revolution and young woman are bringing to the people through their messages of a new beginning for everyone. This feeling of awe, helplessness of being in the throws of larger forces and of the unknown, awakens the citizens of the mountain to the fact that their faith, mountain city, and paradigm are not as stable or certain as they are told; the shaking of the mountain is the city beginning to fall apart, and so too shakes faithful and unfaithful alike, especially the holders of power within the faith who would do anything to keep it from falling apart.
