These are sounds I assembled and music I made and recorded for a great production of a play by playwright Alex Reed, directed by Brad Steinmeyer, for Fringe Festival 2014 at University of Colorado, Boulder. The play Believe is a futuristic dystopian allegory and narrative of a machine mountain that is both a crumbling city and a worldview dominated by a major religious order.

about

After many attempts and failures to write music that captures the feeling and concept of this play, I recorded this epic piece of music in single takes, one track at a time late into the night, as this expansive, swirling and chaotic musical sound opened up. The soundworld and musical emotive ideas for my concept of this play in sound were realized with this piece alone. The inevitability of, what is sometimes, cataclysmic change in our world or worldview has the power to take us into new beginnings, new epochs of our understanding or interaction with our world. Sometimes the universe just tears open and shows you what the stuff of worlds is made of. at the end of the play, the revolution spent, upon realizing the full scope of what lies outside of the mountain city walls, the young woman revolutionary says it like this:

"No more walls. I see... what I see is beautiful, but empty.
So empty. So much space. And I am a stranger in so much of
it ... If this is the universe, it wasn’t made for us.
In the distance, I see vast eruptions of pulverizing energy
that would grind me down to my very atoms. Above me, giant
swirling clouds of every color and shape, toxic for me to
breathe. Around me, shattered rocks, a testament to the blind
physical forces that create and destroy life with cold
impartiality. And between them all, empty space. Gulfs and
chasms of absence. Crushing, despairing nothing. Only the
starlight shoots across the void, happily oblivious. This is
a universe made for stars to look upon. Not me.
And yet, I’m happy to look upon it too. I share existence
with those clouds, rocks, and stars. And the universe was
never aware of itself until I gazed upon it." (Act II, scene 7)

Time for a new worldview!
